Normal Dysfunction – The Price of Living with CFS or Fibro

Before you even open your eyes, you already know what kind of day lies ahead. Every movement—whether it’s your eyes, arms, or legs—brings pain. And standing up? It’s like gravity itself is working against you, making you feel as if you’re carrying the weight of the world.

The question is, how many steps can you take before your body gives out? Can you make it to the bathroom? Barely. You find yourself lying on the cold floor, heart pounding, sweat dripping, struggling to catch your breath—just to make it through this basic task.

Next—can you muster the strength to reach the kitchen for a cup of coffee, or is the couch your first stop as you wait for your body to settle? Twenty, maybe thirty minutes later, you might finally achieve the simple goal of making it to the bathroom and sitting down with that cup of coffee.T

his is how the day begins for so many living with CFS or fibro.

Is it any wonder that getting anything done feels impossible? Those who don’t live with CFS or fibro can’t truly grasp what dysfunction means. The inability to think clearly, focus, or even muster the energy for basic self-care barely scratches the surface of what it’s like to live with these conditions.

How can you take care of yourself, let alone your home, when you feel like this? Making the bed, getting dressed—simple tasks become monumental. Even standing in the shower is out of the question, leaving you in the same clothes for days.

The same goes for cooking—meals become whatever is quickest and require no effort.

Every effort to complete the simplest of tasks drains your already depleted energy, leaving you completely spent by mid-day.

Lying on the couch, you don’t need to check in with your body to know how you feel. Pain pulses through your muscles and joints, your head clouded in fog. You lay there, shell-shocked—unable to comprehend how you can feel so ill when it’s invisible to everyone else.

Depression takes hold quickly. With no help, no answers, and no cure, it’s easy to wonder—how will your life ever change?

All the things you dream of doing—meeting new people, exploring new places, enjoying time with friends and family, pursuing a career that fulfills your talents and offers financial security…

All gone. All hopelessly out of reach.

But are they?

What I’ve described is just a glimpse into my life when I was struggling with CFS and fibro. I couldn’t imagine living the rest of my life like that. But I knew that others had recovered, and if it was possible for them, it had to be possible for me too.

And it was.
